Concert Review

Do Make Say Think
at the Echo in Los Angeles, CA
October 12, 2004

Up on stage, Do Make Say Think, look like Will Ferrell, a pirate, a snowboarder, Ken Kesey and a couple of drummers. Hey, actually, if they sounded like that, too, would that be such a bad thing? But, instead, they sound sorta like Mogwai and Calexico combined. Holy shit, does Charles Spearin (bass, trumpet) ever look like Will Ferrell. I’m sure that line is obnoxious to him by now. But, really, he looks like Will Ferrell with a moustache, hair parted sharply, pretending to play in a Toronto-based, instrumental, building and wavering, crowd surmounting and thought leading, finally-it-doesn’t-bother-me-that-an LA-crowd-is-completely-still band. It’s that shit that just comes at you in waves and holds you there like a beer in the headlights. It was method I guess. That fucking Will Ferrell, going the Jim Carrey route no doubt.
